Prosecutor for Patrick Kane’s Rape Accuser Quits over Questionable Evidence
On Thursday night, attorney Thomas Eoannou announced that he dropped the accuser as a client after her mother misled him about the nature of acquiring the mystery evidence bag Tuesday, which Eoannou initially said Wednesday had been authenticated by multiple agencies.
The DA said the mother of the accuser was in possession of the bag from August 2 and reiterated that no evidence from the case had been compromised, showing video of the rape kit being transported into a police evidence room.
Sedita said the mother was given the bag at a hospital when her daughter was examined but that it never contained a rape kit, as the mother had claimed it did.
Eoannou, of Buffalo, New York, said he began to doubt the story when someone provided information about “misrepresentations” concerning the evidence bag.
Cambria responded Friday afternoon to Sedita’s statements about a supposed evidence bag that was mysteriously left tucked inside the victim’s mother’s front door. Today, the District Attorney held a press conference strongly implying that the bag was a fake and was a hoax perpetrated by the accuser’s mother.
Sedita said they have no reason to believe that is the case at this time.
Sports radio station update anchor Julie DiCaro – who regularly contributes to 670 The Score – tweeted Friday that she made the decision to stay home from work after receiving the tweet Thursday evening. The Kane case will either be administratively closed or presented to a grand jury.
Kane’s agent Pat Brisson added, “I believe it’s another step in the right direction”.
For now, it appears the primary focus is no longer on whether Kane allegedly raped a woman at his summer home just outside of Buffalo, but rather whether the complainant played a part in staging a hoax to mislead investigators.
“There was an effort here with an item that the actual accuser knew the character of to, if you will, undermine the science that completely supports my client”, Cambria said. “This happening today is freaky”, Cambria said, noting that officials had confirmed all the evidence had been accounted for.
“I don’t know what’s true and what’s not true”, Eoannou said Thursday night.
“I think it underscores what I’ve said at the beginning: don’t jump to conclusions”.
The accuser’s mother is also unlikely to be charged with a crime since she did not give false statements about the bag under oath, but only to the family’s lawyer. Kane has maintained his innocence throughout.
However, the absence of DNA evidence doesn’t necessarily mean that a sexual assault did not occur.
The investigation into the sexual assault claim is still ongoing, after which Sedita will determine whether or not the case moves forward to the grand jury. The unnamed woman said she and her friend immediately left the hockey player’s home and went to the hospital.
