Prosecutors charge 4 men in shooting of Minneapolis protesters
All four men were arrested within 24 hours of the shooting.
Authorities continue to look into whether to charge the four with hate crimes.
Braxton said she was a little nervous about bringing her son, but she wanted him to see the protest “because it’s happening and because this is about his future”. Three of the suspects are white, one is of Asian descent.
“I wake up in the morning crying and I go to sleep crying, that’s how my life has changed”, Covarrubias said. Also of concern is gunfire in the area, a residential neighborhood, as well as false medical calls for help that hinder response to actual calls. In the video, Scarsella said they are on a “search and recovery mission” and J.S. displayed a handgun and ended the video with the words “stay white”, the complaint said.
Hanson was later convicted of failing to wear a seatbelt – a petty misdemeanor, according to Hennepin County Court records. The county attorney’s office has asked that bail for Scarsella be set at $500,000 and $250,000 for the other three.
In Minneapolis, Jamar ONeal Clark, 24, died earlier this month after he was shot during an apparent scuffle with a police officer.
A major driver in the protest is a demand that investigators release videos taken at the Clark shooting scene.
Eighteen-year-old Wesley Martin was among some two dozen people at the encampment Monday outside a north side precinct. He said city officials can do what they want, but protesters aren’t leaving. “Now we have the opportunity and the need to move forward from the 4th Precinct to the Capitol of Minnesota”, he said. “We’re patient because we knew you were going to come along, but this isn’t new”. While some say Clark was handcuffed, an attorney for one of the officers has said Clark wasn’t handcuffed and had his hands on an officer’s gun when he was shot.
Some witnesses have said that Clark was handcuffed when he was shot, while police initially said that did not appear to be the case. State and federal investigations are underway. The mayor cited the wood-burning fires, threats against officers and a shooting incident last week that is prompting felony charges to be filed Monday against four suspects. He then told Hanson and another passenger in the vehicle that he would “beat the s*** out of” them while pointing his Taser at Hanson.
In the aftermath of the officer-involved shooting, the officers involved were criticized for not deploying their department-issued body-worn cameras before making contact with Jones – a department policy.
