Protesters and Supporters Gather Outside Obama Town Hall Event
Enter Taya Kyle, 41, who trashed the president’s plan as completely useless!
As we reported earlier this morning, President Obama’s town hall was supposed to be a chance for him to sell the concept of gun control on live television.
The 75-minute special, hosted by Anderson Cooper, fell short of Fox News Channel’s audience of 3 million viewers, but outpaced MSNBC, seen by slightly fewer than 1 million.
Taya Kyle, widow of Chris Kyle, Navy SEAL and inspiration for the film American Sniper, asked the first question at CNN’s gun-control town hall Thursday night, and that question was: “Why now?”
Kyle disputed the administration’s repeated assertion that stricter gun control measures would curb violence, remarking that under Obama’s presidency the murder rate is at an all-time low while gun ownership is at its peak in the U.S.
“Thank you for having the courage and leadership to take executive action on preventing more unnecessary gun violence in this country”, the letter says.
Obama says the government should deem anyone “in the business” of selling guns to be a dealer, regardless of where he or she sells guns.
But we know that guns could still flow into California from Nevada and Arizona. Babeu’s sentiments were echoed by Chris Jacob, the vice president of the American Firearms Retailers Association, who said that if we enforce the earlier existing laws then the country will be better served. I think two people died with that one. We have all adjusted well to the seat-belt law, airbags, and laws against drunken driving and, in some states, texting in a auto.
In response, the President said he did not believe that higher levels of gun ownership directly related to lower levels of crime. And if you look at the places where there are pretty stiff restrictions on gun ownership, the crime’s dropped really quickly.
“The Congress, as representatives of the people, makes the laws”. An assault rifle is a fully-automatic weapon that is used by law enforcement and the military.
Kyle added that criminals would not be stopped from getting guns even if background checks were expanded.
Federal firearm dealers also help private buyers complete online gun purchases and transactions beyond state lines.
