Protesters hit the streets for hot day of marches before DNC
Just days before the party’s convention in Philadelphia, WikiLeaks published emails from the Democratic National Committee, which Wasserman Schultz also chairs, that appeared to show top officials in the party exchanging ideas to hurt Sen.
Wasserman Schultz faced criticisms and calls to resign for months, spurred by a series of controversies involving the party’s handling of the insurgent presidential campaign of Sen.
In a statement, Wasserman Schultz said she would “step down as Party Chair at the end of this convention”.
Shortly before news broke that Schultz would be stepping down from her position as DNC chairwoman, Sanders called on her to resign in an interview with ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. Rep. Marcia Fudge was named the permanent chair of the convention by the DNC, CNN reported. “So what I suggested to be true six months ago turned out to be true”.
A DNC rules committee member says she was voted as convention chairwoman as part of standard procedures.
Clinton issued a statement to thank Wasserman Schultz and to state her friend “will continue to serve as a surrogate for my campaign nationally, in Florida, and in other key states”. Instead, he wants efforts focused on keeping Republic Nominee Donald Trump out of the White House.
“I am not an athiest, but aside from that, it is an outrage and sad”, Sanders said Sunday, adding that the emails weren’t a “big shock” to him.
Tim Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton, were back at their longtime church in Richmond, Virginia, on Sunday, a day after the Virginia senator made his campaign debut with presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton as her running mate.
Meanwhile, thousands of Sanders’ supporters assembled in Philadelphia on Sunday to march from city hall to a nearby park, voicing their anger over they said was sabotage of the Sanders campaign. She should go, he said, “not only because of the prejudice I think [the DNC] showed during the campaign but also because I think we need new leadership that will open up that party” to working people, young people and “have the kind of vitality we need”. Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, has endorsed Clinton, but many of his supporters have not.
Following Wasserman Schultz’s announcement, Sanders again stressed the importance for a political party to stay impartial during the primary process. Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager, raised questions about whether Russians may have had a hand in the hack attack, and were interested in helping Trump, who has offered praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The incident will most likely widen the chasm between supporters of the two camps, as Clinton vies for their support the week she is to be officially nominated as the party’s presidential candidate.
“I was definitely disappointed, but it was a long shot and he got a lot farther than anyone expected he would get”, said Burns, who works for the city’s elderly commission.
But Sanders maintained that his support for Clinton is strong, saying his immediate message to his supporters now is that “disastrous” Donald Trump must be defeated.
“Elections to me are about the future and Hillary will talk about the kind of future she will imagine about a country that includes everyone and leaves no one behind”, Grossman said.
But for Sanders’ supporters, a resignation would be a good start, but it just wouldn’t be enough.
