Protesters March at City Hall for Laquan McDonald, Tyshawn Lee
“Chicago’s response to Laquan’s death appears calculated to minimize political damage to the mayor, by removing this case from the election cycle”, he said, referring to a gap between the shooting and the first-degree murder charge brought against Van Dyke on Tuesday.
“There were 2,000 to 3,000 people involved in the protest [on Michigan Avenue in the heart of Chicago’s shopping district]”, Chapman said on Friday. One major development was that Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder for shooting Laquan McDonald.
Van Dyke was the subject of 18 civilian complaints over 14 years, including allegations that he used racial epithets and excessive force, police and court records show.
Entrances were also blocked at the Disney Store, the Apple Store, Nike, Tiffany & Co., and Neiman Marcus. There were a few reported arrests involving chastised protesters.
On Black Friday 2015, hundreds of demonstrators blocked Chicago’s shopping district in a bid to draw attention to the alleged police brutality, according to ABC News.
Shutting down Chicago’s Magnificent Mile on Black Friday was a calculated move by those who protested in the wake of the Laquan McDonald video. He also acknowledged that the public has the right to protest, but the Chicago police will not tolerate criminal acts during demonstrations.
But, even as demonstrators took to Chicago’s streets to protest the shooting of McDonald by a white police officer, law enforcement experts around the nation warned that recordings like the one that captured the teen’s death can paint an incomplete picture.
Business is back to normal on Michigan Avenue in Chicago but this thing may not be over.
What continues to roil the black community is that police and prosecutor Alvarez waited 400 days to release the tape, well after a spring election in which Emanuel faced stiff competition and had to undergo the first runoff election in Chicago history, an eyebrow-raising moment for an incumbent in a city renowned for its “machine”-like politics”. Listen to robo call from Rev. Jesse Jackson ” Join us Friday, the day after Thanksgiving at 11 a.m., MI and Wacker Drive to march down the Magnificent Mile to express our outrage and our sense of dignity”, the message said.
Instead it shows the teen, reportedly with PCP in his system, holding a small knife but moving away from police when Van Dyke opens fire – and inexplicably keeps firing at McDonald’s flinching body on the ground. “So we want mass demonstrations, mass voter registration”. It took one year for the officer to be prosecuted. Several protesters said they were parents of black men killed by Chicago officers. But worse than that… the city and the [police] union did not tell the truth about what happened, they both said hours after the shooting that this young man lunged at police.
The FOP also is paying the lawyer representing Van Dyke.
Van Dyke shot McDonald at a range of about 15 feet.
The protests thus far have been mostly peaceful, with activists calling for the resignations of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.
“I was just trying to help the police with their investigation”, Darshane said.
Tensions flared in this Midwestern city after officials released a dashcam video on Tuesday showing officer Jason Van Dyke shot Laquan McDonald 16 times after the teenager walked away from him in October 2014.
