Protesters shut down Interstate 94 near downtown St. Paul

Meanwhile in Baton Rouge, hundreds of protesters continued demonstrations over Sterling’s death with some wearing T-shirts with “Black Lives Matter” and “I can’t keep calm, I have a black son” written on them.

“The State Patrol arrested and booked 50 individuals for third degree riot, a gross misdemeanor”, St. Paul City Attorney Samuel Clark said.

Demonstrations turned violent in St. Paul, Minn., during protests over the killing of a black man by a Latino police officer in a routine traffic stop, resulting in more than 100 arrests and injuries to several officers who faced rocks, bottles and Molotov cocktails.

Doubling up officers “is a resource-intense approach and it will be a significant challenge for some police departments to sustain that strategy for very long”, said Thomas Manger, president of the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA), which represents police chiefs from the country’s largest cities.

Authorities say protesters threw objects at officers and dumped liquid on them.

Five police officers were killed after a sniper opened fire Thursday night in Dallas during a protest against the killings of black men last week by police officers in Louisiana and Minnesota.

Police say a vehicle struck a Dallas police auto parked outside the home of one of five officers slain during a protest last week. She said she saw about 30 people being peacefully taken away by officers, who said they warned protesters they would be subject to arrest if they didn’t disassemble.

Lavish “Diamond” Reynolds called into a Sunday morning service at The Potter’s House, a Dallas megachurch, to talk about the death of her boyfriend, Philando Castile.

The unrest happened just miles from where Philando Castile, one of the victims, was shot by police.

“I guess I wasn’t moving fast enough for him”, said Mike Martin, referencing a police officer who pepper-sprayed him during the protests. Police said early Sunday morning that they were now clearing debris from the roadway in an effort to reopen the interstate.

The St. Paul Police Department tweeted that arrests have been made during the protest but didn’t indicate how many.

It was a striking contrast to their approach at protests outside the governor’s mansion in the wake of motorist Philando Castile’s police shooting death Wednesday in the suburb of Falcon Heights.

Some protesters condemned the activity and said the protest was largely peaceful. Prominent black activist and former Baltimore mayoral candidate Deray McKesson was among those arrested. “It’s not what we do here in St. Paul”, Turner said.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards told a news conference earlier on Sunday that he was proud of how the police had handled the protests so far, saying law enforcement had responded in a “moderate” manner.
