Protests of police killings: Dozens of arrests in Louisiana
“There’s a lot of work to be done, with this police department specifically”.
The gathering at the Triple S convenience store came after overnight demonstrations produced tense moments resulting in 30 arrests. The activist, DeRay McKesson, of Campaign Zero, posted several videos from the protest prior to his arrest, showing police activity. Several officers were injured by rocks, firecrackers and other debris thrown by protesters on Saturday night.
Alton Sterling, 37, was fatally shot Tuesday, July 5, in Baton Rouge, during a struggle with two police officers outside a convenience store.
On Thursday, a “lone shooter” who “wanted to kill white people” shot dead five police officers in Dallas.
Organizers say they chose to move the location of Friday’s protest because they felt they were not being heard outside of the Triple S Food Mart.
Police said the interstate reopened early Sunday morning. “We were able to stop them before they were able to achieve that”.
Authorities in Baton Rouge say more than 100 people were jailed in connection with the Black Lives Matter protests held in the Lousiana city over the weekend. He says the 25-year-old Army veteran wrote the letters “RB”, and that investigators are looking through things found in his suburban Dallas home to try to figure out what he may have meant by that. The vast majority of the Louisiana residents were from the Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas. Protesters said it was a peaceful event, but one of the marchers was arrested by San Jose police.
The prominent Black Lives Matter activist, three journalists and more than 120 other people have been taken into custody in Louisiana over the past two days, authorities said Sunday, after protests over the fatal shooting of an African-American man by two white police officers in Baton Rouge.

A first wave of arrests took place on Friday and early Saturday, with 30 people taken into custody.
Black military veteran Micah Johnson was eventually killed in an explosion detonated by police, after reportedly saying he wanted to kill more white police. After a brief standoff, police began ordering protesters out of the road and arrested anyone who refused to move.
Flanked by law enforcement leaders, Mr Edwards said he does not believe officers have been overly aggressive by using riot gear to push protesters off a highway.

Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman Cpl L’Jean McKneely tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/29wr054) that Mckesson was arrested Saturday night. After Black Panthers members posed for photos with people outside a Circle K convenience store across the street from the department, they joined protesters who had marched from nearby Cortana Mall. “You want to have every precautionary means that you may need…to disperse these crowds”. Protesting peacefully is the best way to honor those killed, he said, adding that authorities won’t allow people “to incite hate and violence”. At one point numerous police cars, with their blue lights flashing, sped off down the street where a smaller group of protesters had walked.
Hundreds of protesters marched from City Hall to Union Square in NY. Sterling was shot during the altercation and died at the scene, police said. The U.S. Justice Department has launched a civil rights investigation. Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said in a statement that he won’t have access to the federal investigation on the shooting until it’s completed and a decision has been made on potential federal charges.
The demonstrations protested Tuesday’s shooting of Alton Sterling, whose death was captured on cellphone video. He cited his professional relationship with the parents of one of the officers involved in the shooting, Blane Salamoni.
