Protests over police killings aim at occupying interstates

Louisiana’s attorney general says he won’t have access to the federal investigation on the Alton Sterling shooting until it’s completed and a decision has been made on potential federal charges.

McKesson filmed his own arrest via Periscope. King later tweeted after speaking with her friends that the woman has been released from jail and has a 5-year-old son. Mckesson is a leader in the Black Lives Matter movement and formerly ran for mayor of Baltimore.
As news spread of McKesson’s arrest, the #FreeDeRay hashtag began trending on Twitter, with many people urging the Baton Rouge Police Department to free McKesson. Video of the shooting, which showed an officer shooting Sterling in the chest, and another shooting in Minnesota prompted protests throughout the country, including Baton Rouge.
Saturday night, police could be seen detaining at least three people after confiscating some weapons earlier in the day.
Edwards also said it is critical for people attending protests to follow the directions of law enforcement officers. Protesters then fanned out to the Baton Rouge police department and the state Capitol.
The protest was tense earlier as police in riot gear came out, apparently to clear the road so traffic could pass through. Bowers wasn’t present when Bates was arrested near police headquarters.
Baton Rouge resident Marie Flowers came to the protest in with her three children. She didn’t say anything. “Our troopers maintained their poise and demeanor and focused on the job at hand, all the while enduring angry epithets and an occasional water bottle hurled from inside the crowd”.
The protest was one of several held throughout the nation in support of two black men recently shot to death by police, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.
Hundreds of people marched in West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale as part of the Black Lives Matter movement in demonstrations that ended peacefully.

According to the New York Times, McKesson was arrested on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge after officers threatened him and others with arrest for walking on the road (there was no sidewalk to move to, McKesson told viewers via live-streaming app Pericope).
