Proud locals say star is born in Ireland’s Dunne
Alliss said: “Ah, that must be mum”.
Dunne now leads the field alongside Jordan Day and Louis Oosthuizen, with Jordan Spieth just one shot behind as the latter aims for his third major of the year. As her face appeared on screen, the 84-year-old neglected the golden rule of broadcasting; think before you speak. “She is probably thinking – “if this goes in I get a new kitchen”, he said.
The BBC today apologised for Alliss’ remarks.
“Peter made a light hearted comment which was inappropriate and we apologise if anyone was offended”, said a spokesman from the BBC on Tuesday.
Irish fans were treated to some thrilling golf over the weekend though as Padraig Harrington also turned in a masterclass at St Andrews but the majority of the world’s eyes were on the incredible exploits of the amateur Paul Dunne.
“Perhaps he likes older women”.
“I was in a similar enough situation”, the world number one and now AIG ambassador told The42 today.
Alliss, who is known as the BBC’s voice of golf, has for decades divided opinion, with some treasuring his pithy observations and deep knowledge of the game but others enraged by what they see as outdated and reactionary views.
