Proud Wenger hails Arsenal’s ‘spectacular’ FA Cup win
Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was disappointed by Alexis Sanchez’s opening goal for Arsenal in the FA Cup final, which the recently crowned English Premier League (EPL) champions lost 1-2, and said it should have been disallowed.
Despite a host of clubs spending big last summer, Tottenham emerged as the only real title rival to Conte’s side, who eventually finished seven points clear. However, television replays raised doubts on the referee’s decision to award the goal.
Aaron Ramsey hit back immediately to put Arsenal back on top but Wenger conceded that he was concerned his players could fold after being pegged back.
Fabregas scored five league goals as Chelsea won the title.
“We are at the end of the season and a lot of players are exhausted and then there is a lot of pressure”.
“We went to work on Diego Costa”, Mertesacker said after the win at Wembley, as quoted by the Mirror. To secure the club’s 13 and Arsene Wenger’s 7th F.A. Cup every player stepped up yesterday and it really showed when we hit the post on three occasions and didn’t score.
Victor Moses forced David Ospina into a fine save in the second period, before the Chelsea wing-back was given a second yellow card on 68 minutes for diving in the penalty area. While Chelsea equalized in the 76th, it was to be only a tease for Conte.
The 28-year-old’s return to form coincided with Arsenal’s own upturn in fortunes, but whilst some have questioned the player’s attitude at times this season, Wright has insisted that those concerns are wide of the mark. During the past years, even when Arsenal has had a poor season and fans become frustrated, they somehow bounce back towards the end and save their Champions League spot.
Asked if delivering the FA Cup would be a flawless way to say goodbye having been at the club for almost 21 years, Wenger replied: “There is no ideal way”.
“To be able to do that today was a very proud moment for myself and to lead the team out for the first time officially as captain is a great moment for myself”.
