Providence vs. Michigan State recap: Friars fall to Spartans in Wooden Final
The Friars were 23-for-29 from the line, while Evansville was just 5-for-11. Names like T.J. McConnell, Nick Johnson, Stanley Johnson, Brandon Ashley, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Aaron Gordon all have proved they could play that role during Miller’s tenure.
The Friars hang tough but fall short to the Spartans by a score of 77-64 in the final round of the Wooden Legacy. The large difference has to do with Iowa playing in the 7th-place game of one tournament on the east coast, while Michigan State plays in the championship game of a tourney on the west coast. They have defeated two teams that went to the NCAA Tournament previous year in Harvard and Arizona, a team that participated in the NIT (Illinois), two teams that were in the CIT (Evansville, NJIT) and they also defeated Brown. “So our effort level has to be there every play”.
Josh Scott led the way with 18 points, eight rebounds and five blocks as Colorado moved to 5-1 on the season with an 82-52 win over Northern Colorado.
The Arizona Wildcats are enjoying their bye week while most of the rest of college football finishes the regular season this holiday weekend.
As for the Friars, their main guy is Kris Dunn.
Right now, Dunn is a projected Top 10 pick and Valentine is not. “I’ve never felt worse after a win last night”, Miller stated.
Following a dominant 2014-15 season that saw him take home the Big East POY and Defensive POY, Providence PG Kris Dunn struck fear into the hearts of college coaches when he announced that he was returning for his redshirt junior year.
This Arizona team doesn’t have the sky-high ceiling of the previous two, but there’s certainly room for growth.
The Wildcats went down to the wire Thursday night with Santa Clara and escaped with an overtime victory, but left many scratching their heads. Senior shooting guard Bryn Forbes finished with 18 points and freshman point/shooter Matt McQuaid scored 12 points (6-for-8) and pulled down six rebounds. Kadeem Allen and Allonzo Trier scored 13 points apiece, with Allen also grabbing seven rebounds. Who can stop the 6-foot-10 forward this season?
After Providence’s Rodney Bullock picked up his fourth foul during Arizona’s 22-9 run, Cooley bellowed, “We’re going to win this game”. “We didn’t let the loss last night get to us and we were patient tonight and I think that a sign of maturity”. “He has shown glimpses”.
Evansville: Balentine, the leading active scorer among Division I players, is trying to join Larry Bird (Indiana St.) and Oscar Robertson (Cincinnati) as the only players to lead the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring in three consecutive seasons.
So how good can Arizona be? Ten of the Wildcats’ 15 players are from California.
