Pryor trying to catch on at WR
His season stopped short with a hamstring injury.
Though his experience included just a few gadget plays here and there, Pryor saw wide receiver as his fastest path back to a 53-man roster. “Until you feel you’ve found what you would call a long-term solution [at quarterback], I don’t think we could have done any better than bringing in a guy like Josh McCown”, Pettine said in June.
Cornerback Joe Haden, who stands at 5 foot 11, described Pryor as physically imposing.
“I did not commit one-day of my trip, it never clipped into my head, ‘Gee, I wonder where Johnny is or what he is doing, ‘” Pettine said, introducing the workforce wouldn’t float over any person as it expects these to behave professionally.
“We’d do a workout for an hour and be running the whole time”, Pryor says. “Painful, but I’ve seen worse”. Pryor has all the makings to be an elite wide receiver in the NFL.
It’s quite a departure for a guy who was MVP of the Sugar and Rose bowls and a third-round pick of the Raiders in the supplemental draft. His renewed dedication to the Browns and to being a starting quarterback in the NFL has been praised by multiple teammates and by others within the organization.
This is another case of a “known” veteran commodity squaring off against a younger player with more upside, but the difference here is that Smith has actually shown occasional flashes of good play in his two years with the Jets. The Cleveland Browns, intrigued, signed him off waivers. One of the things that’s big in my life is servant leadership. Thats kind of how I did it. Mr. Farmer (general manager Ray Farmer) and coach Flip, when I came to talk to them, they were excited and said there are different ways they can use me.
Pettine joked that he’s seen projections ranking the Browns fifth in the four-team AFC North, but got more serious about how the Browns can use that to their advantage. Farmer’s always searching for a hidden gem, and Pryor has the chance to be one. Some of the coaches know I can do it, but where are the reps going to come from with the great quarterbacks already there? “They believe that I can be an outstanding receiver if I put the time in and work hard and if I believe in myself”, he said.

Pryor has been ecstatic with Gordon’s willingness to teach him the position, and the two have developed a close relationship since Pryor’s made the switch. I’m very happy to be here because these guys in the locker room are phenomenal. If you’re not getting them, it’s tough to make progress. Asking a lot of questions, being humble, being a sponge and taking in everybody’s words.
The first preseason game is August. 9, the Hall of Fame game between Minnesota and Pittsburgh in Canton, Ohio.
In the rest of his career, he’s registered just a 57.6 percent completion rate while averaging 6.4 yards per attempt and throwing 48 touchdowns against 58 interceptions.
The final hurdle is making plays when the ball’s in the air. Like me, I’ve just got to be out there not letting people catch the ball on me. All those groups will get mixed.
A 6-foot-5, 230-pound physical specimen from Jeannette, Pennsylvania, Pryor was one of the most hyped athletes in recent memory coming out of high school when he landed at Ohio State.
