Mohammad Irfan’s fitness issues meant a return for Mohammad Amir after missing the Headingley defeat, while Pakistan also brought back Shoaib Malik at the expense of Sami Aslam, with Azhar returning to opener. They were in trouble at 72 for four before a fifth-wicket stand of 103 between Ben Stokes (69) and Jonny Bairstow (61) got their innings back on track.
After battering the record books in Nottingham, milestones were in rather shorter supply in Yorkshire although Root did become the third-fastest player of all time to score 3,000 ODI runs while Morgan became the third England player after Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood to score 5,000 ODI runs – 744 of which were for Ireland.
It didn’t help Pakistan’s cause that Mohammad Irfan, arguably its most effective bowler on the day, was able to deliver only five overs before a niggle resurfaced, leaving him with figures 2 for 26. Bairstow was drafted in as a last-minute replacement for Jos Buttler.
“Over the previous year or so we’ve had our three highest scores (in ODI cricket) and we have the personell in the side who play the way they play and it’s fantastic to have them in the side, guys like Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow”, added Moeen. Earlier this season he played the whole one-day series against Sri Lanka – albeit batting just three times – because Ben Stokes was unavailable and past year played three times against Australia when Buttler was given a break.
Driving at Irfan, Hales was caught behind for eight and soon afterwards, Irfan contributed again, taking a high catch at long leg to dismiss Root for 30, and give Hasan Ali his first wicket.
The England bandwagon in One Day International (ODI) cricket rolls on after they overcame a stiff Pakistan challenge to win the fourth ODI at Headingley on 1 September. Bairstow followed suit by skipping down the pitch to drive Mohammad Nawaz for another six.
He went on a run-a-ball fifty, including five fours and a six.
England were 92 for three after Wasim struck third ball when Morgan (10) tamely chipped a full toss straight back to the left-arm spinner. I would be desperately disappointed if I didn’t play at Cardiff but that’s me as a person and my will to want to play for England in every format.
With still 73 required of the last 15 overs, Bairstow, rested for the first three ODIs against Pakistan, took the reins from the left-handed batsman and continued with a stiff resistance along with Ali, who had taken two wickets earlier in the day.
Despite some late fireworks from Imad Wasim, the Swansea-born all-rounder who scored an unbeaten 57 from 41 balls, Pakistan’s total still did not look enough.
Moeen tempted Babar Azam to cut and he was caught at backward point for 12.
Belated aggression came courtesy of Imad, the left-hander hitting seven fours and a six in his second successive half-century.
