Putin: No one outside should impose form of government on Syria
President Vladimir Putin has facilitated an export prohibition on nuclear equipment and technology to Iran, a Kremlin decree released on Monday revealed, after a deal reached in July with world powers on its atomic system. According to Ushakov, considerable attention will be paid to urgent worldwide issues such as settlement of the Syrian conflict, implementation of the joint comprehensive action plan on the Iranian nuclear program and fight against terrorism.
“We exchanged views on the situation in Syria”, Putin said adding Russia’s military operation in Syria would have been impossible without Iran’s support.
“The United States is now trying to achieve its failed military objectives in Syria by political means”, Khamenei said with regards to the peace talks to end the civil war in Syria. Iran has been a key backer of Assad since the 2011 uprising against his rule that started the war, and Iranian forces have played a prominent role in supporting the Syrian army in a renewed ground offensive in the country’s strategically vital west.
“No one outside of Syria can and should impose on its people a few forms of government and who personally must govern it. This should only be decided by the Syrian people”, he said at a meeting with Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei, which was broadcast on the Rossiya 24 television channel on November 23.
The deals were signed by the two countries’ high ranking officials at presence of their presidents on the sidelines of the 3rd Gas Exporting Countries Forum on Monday.
Russian Federation launched its air campaign on September 30 purporting to strike at terrorist targets as ISIL made gains in the country.
The proposal, which seems to draw heavily on a recently circulated Russian initiative, states that “free and fair elections” would be held according to a new constitution within 18 months. The vote would determine a new parliament, though not necessarily a new president. Tehran is widely seen as taking a more rigid stance.
