Qatar denies SpiceJet talks, confirms Indigo interest
The Doha-based carrier issued the statement this week in response to recent news reports suggesting it could take a stake in Delhi-based SpiceJet.
“This is to confirm that Qatar Airways is not in talks to pursue a commercial stake in SpiceJet”, the statement said.
India’s second biggest budget carrier by market share, which last quarter made its first profit since 2013, is in the midst of a recovery plan after it nearly collapsed late previous year.
Ending days of speculation, Qatar Airways confirms it is in talks with an Indian carrier for a possible equity stake, just not SpiceJet. These stake sale comments are unfounded and are believed to be deliberately spread to influence share valuations. InterGlobe Aviation, the owner of IndiGo last month filed a draft red herring prospectus to sell shares in an initial public offering.
“Indigo is not even in talks with Qatar…The question does not arise”. IndiGo did not respond to a request for comment.
The following month, Al-Baker was back in India as part of the delegation accompanying Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar.

Airlines’s passenger traffic has grown 20 percent during January-June to 3.88 crore fliers in India, data shows. Similarly, Etihad Airways serves a total of 10 Indian cities via its hub, Abu Dhabi.
