Qatar World Cup to start in November
The confirmation, which had been expected since Qatar was announced as the host in late 2010, came at the governing body’s Executive Committee meeting in Zurich.
The calendar, which was announced by FIFA’s executive committee on Friday, means clubs must release players to the 32 World Cup teams by November 14, 2022 – a week before the start of the tournament.
The World Cup will kick off on the 21 of November and will last only 28 days.
Normally, a World Cup that’s over seven years away isn’t something to get too excited about, but a World Cup that will be immediately followed by Christmas has us counting down the days, months and indeed years already.
On Thursday, Switzerland’s Attorney General Michael Lauber’s office said Federation Internationale de Football Association had agreed to hand over Valcke’s emails, evidence Lauber had demanded as part of an investigation into World Cup bidding.
The decision to shift the tournament to winter will disrupt numerous domestic divisions, including the Premier League, which contains a busy schedule over the festive period.
However with temperatures reaching an average high of 50 degrees Celsius in July the likelihood was always that the tournament would have to take place in a different timeslot.
However, Federation Internationale de Football Association is asking for support from the clubs to allow players who are called up by their national teams to be given the chance to be part of the Olympic experience. Another strike against Qatar hosting is their statement of how many people will die from creating brand new cities and stadiums for this tournament.
