QB Keenan Reynolds makes history as Navy pushes past Army
“The only thing that is really disturbing, to all of us, is the fact that it’s been played out through the course of the week”, Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk told The Associated Press before Saturday’s game.
But it did not always seem that easy.
The senior is the first quarterback in the history of the rivalry to go 4-0 against an opponent.
With the win, Reynolds (113 yards passing, 136 yards rushing) became the only quarterback in the 116-year history of the Army-Navy game to win all four games played in the series. They held Army to 126 yards of total offense in the second half.
Gladchuk and the rest of the his administration didn’t want any distractions heading into the game against Army game December 12. The game’s intensity left both coaches in tears walking off the field after the teams sung their alma maters with the Cadets and Midshipmen as an improved Army team couldn’t topple a veteran laden Midshipmen squad and end the streak.
Army quarterback Chris Carter (7) throws for a touchdown during an NCAA college football game against Navy, Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, in Philadelphia.
“At halftime we kind of rallied and made a point to bring more intensity to the game”, said Barbour.
Reynolds closed out his brilliant career against Army by accumulating 249 yards and accounting for all three touchdowns in No. 21 Navy’s 21-17 win. Navy beat Air Force 33-11 this season.
“My faith is everything to me”, Niumatalolo said. He has set many records, but his football career will be known for his Army-Navy Game success as much as anything.
On Saturday, the score was 17-14 Army at the half.
Many didn’t expect such a tight game, especially after Reynolds sprinted to a 58-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter giving the Midshipmen a 7-3 lead. “To know that those guys are going out to protect us, I think all of us here can sleep better at night knowing that”. It was during World War II and let everyone have a respite from the horrors of war and Navy ended up the victor 17-10. The four-point loss was a heartbreaking but fitting end to Army’s season, as the Black Knights lost eight games this season by a touchdown or less.
An inspired Navy defense continued its dominance in the second half, forcing its fourth straight three and out in the third quarter as Will Anthony exploded through the line for a sack on third down. Reynolds delivered the pass to Tillman in stride, and the junior wide receiver ran untouched down the right sideline for the game’s final points before 69,722 at Lincoln Financial Field. Niumatalolo will visit the BYU campus for an interview later this week.
Army and Navy turned a game already stuffed with pomp and patriotism into a bit of a fashion show.
“We’ve got to do a better job of executing”.
