Quake With Magnitude Of 4.3 Rattles Area Near Devore
It said the quake, about 4 kilometers south-west of Devore, happened at 1:48 p.m. UTC and was relatively shallow at about 5.6 kilometers below the earth.
The original natural disaster was followed by at least three aftershocks with the strongest having a magnitude of 3.8, according to USGS.
This story is developing.
“I just worry that there will be a bigger one that will cause a lot of damage”, she said.
The magnitude 4.3 quake at 11:39 p.m. was centred about eight kilometres east of Sidney, between Victoria and Vancouver, according to preliminary information from Earthquakes Canada.
“We could hear the dishes rattling”, she said.
No injuries were immediately reported, but the quake knocked out power to about 4,400 homes and businesses; electricity was restored quickly, Edmond spokesman Casey Moore said.
Traditionally earthquakes of this size are a monthly occurrence in Southern California, but “it’s been quieter for the last few years”, Jones said.
“I was sitting in my chair in the living room and there was this boom… like a auto had hit the house”, said Vancouver resident Darren Birch.
Hundreds of calls reportedly poured in to 911 from frightened people asking about or reporting the quake, prompting officials to remind them not to call unless it’s an immediate emergency.
There are no reports of any significant damage at this time.
The quake mirrors a similar tremor reported to have taken place in San Bernardino California several hours before.
The largest of the aftershocks has measured magnitude 3.8, but most were too small to be felt.
