Qualcomm is working on a upgrade for Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC
The good news here is that Qualcomm is finally designing new chipsets for the Wear OS platform, which could give it fresh impetus in the fight against Samsung’s Tizen and Apple’s Watch OS platforms.
Further, Wear OS director of product, Dennis Troper, has also confirmed the fact that a new platform will be released and he also hinted that Qualcomm’s third-generation platform would be significantly different from what it offered previously.
After seeing a dark-themed UI in Wear OS, I really want one for actual Android.
Knowing that something better is coming down the pipeline, we’d foresee that the market for Wear OS wearables won’t be picking up until Q3 or even Q4 when the new chipset and devices are officially announced. The company insinuates a change on this front powered by the new chips. Smartwatches with the new hardware will be available by the holiday season. Unfortunately, Kedia didn’t get more specific than that. More sport/fitness watches will gain Global Positioning System functionality too. As Android Police notes, users can get the time by pressing the slide button and a long press on the display will bring back a fully-operational mode of the device. This potentially opens the door for more accurate tracking and new health features.
For some time, smartwatches rocking Wear OS, formerly known as Android Wear, were saddled with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset, regardless of the brand of smartwatch they had strapped to their wrists. Until researchers come up with higher capacity batteries which charge faster, more often and are less prone to failure, we have to make do with what we have. A smaller process generally translates into better endurance and enables a smaller form factor. The San Diego based chip maker said that it has optimised software for some mobile platforms to help OEMs to speedily deliver Android updates on their Snapdragon-based devices. Google warns that they aren’t quite ready for use as your daily driver, but considering the most severe reported bug is some wonky power button behavior, it sounds like things could be worse.
