Qualcomm still supplies modem chips for next iPhone, sources claim
Despite these earlier reports we have now come across a fresh one suggesting that Intel will not supply the XMM chip to the Cupertino-based giant for use in the upcoming iPhone 6s line-up, but instead Qualcomm will once again cover 100% of orders with a 20nm modem.
Qualcomm is partnering with TSMC to supply all of the modem chips for use in the new iPhones slated for launch in September 2015, the sources said.
According to new data revealed yesterday by sources of Digitimes, Qualcomm will be the sole supplier for the iPhone 6s modem whereas Intel could play its part in 2017. Reports indicate that Apple has been testing Intel’s XMM 7360 Modem which is seen as an interesting advanced prospect to what is now being used.
The two key points made in the request before the court are as follows: “In support of its defenses to the actions filed by Ericsson against Apple in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands, Apple seeks narrowly tailored discovery from its supplier of certain wireless communication chips, namely Qualcomm”. The functionalities accused by Ericsson in these actions generally relate to the chips supplied by Qualcomm for incorporation into various iPhone and iPad models.
In contrast, Qualcomm’s MDM9x35 – which component leaks suggest will be included in Apple’s upcoming iPhones – is built on TSMC’s more compact and power-efficient 20-nanometer manufacturing technology.
When it comes time for Apple to launch its 2017 iPhone, Apple should be able to choose offerings built on 14/16-nanometer manufacturing technologies from both cellular modem vendors. “I can’t see Apple settling for second best technology”.
While Apple has their own processor in the form of the A-series, they still rely on other companies to make their LTE modems.
