Queen Mary 2 crewmember missing off Newfoundland coast
A search is under way after a crew member went overboard from the Queen Mary 2 ocean liner.
A cruise ship which sails between the UK and New York is searching for a crew member who went overboard on Saturday morning, off the coast off Newfoundland.
The cruise line, expected to arrive in Halifax on Monday from the United Kingdom, has now turned around to search for the missing person.
Mr Bonner said: “As the ship appeared to be approaching the Grand Banks, the captain Kevin Oprey made a dignified announcements saying we’re going back to the spot that Mr Ordenes was first thought to be missing”.
Mr Bonner added that passengers also tried to help by peering over the railings, but efforts to find the man were hampered by dense fog. Binder estimated that “hundreds” of his shipmates and crew were scanning the water.
“We are working closely with local authorities”.
The Canadian military has taken the reins in the hunt.
The man is believed to be 420 nautical miles east of St. John’s and according to JTF Atlantic, the container ship Milan Express is assisting in the search.
Search and rescue officials said because of foggy conditions, an aerial search is not possible.
