Querrey survives scary moments to down Djokovic
Novak Djokovic crashed out of Wimbledon in dramatic fashion after going down in four sets to USA star Sam Querrey.
Bidding to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four grand slam titles in the same year, Djokovic was overwhelmed by 28th seed Querrey’s powerful serve.
American Sam Querrey is happy to have beaten tournament top seed and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, but he’s also out to prove he’s not a one-trick pony. Querrey knew he may never get a better chance and stood firm as the Serb fought back, clinching a memorable win as Djokovic faltered in the fourth-set tiebreak.
Djokovic started the tournament as a dominant $1.61 favourite and he was expected to cruise to his third Grand Slam title of the year, but produced an unusually flat effort in the third round against American veteran Sam Querrey and was bundled out of the tournament.
“I’m not going to lie”, Querrey said after beating Djokovic, “after the Novak match, I watched every highlight I could over and over”.
After ending the No. 1-ranked Djokovic’s 30-match Grand Slam winning streak in the third round, Querrey acknowledged, “I’m sure there’s been times where I’ve been much too casual and relaxed and I’ve lost a lot of matches”. “You might have the chance to play the No. 1 in the world on one of the biggest courts once or twice, so it was nice to make the most of that”.
Murray beat Millman 6-3 7-5 6-2, after the world number 67 put up some stern resistance on Centre Court. Rain had saved 29-year-old Djokovic on Friday when the match was halted with him trailing by two sets after being comprehensively outplayed. “(Djokovic) is arguably one of the best ever. “I feel like I did a really good job of putting my head down”.
“It’s an awesome feeling to be able to hold four Grand Slams at the same time”.
No one will ever confuse a win over Nicolas Mahut with one over Novak Djokovic. “It’s great. Sam’s a great guy”.
“I believe in positive things in life, and I managed to win four Grand Slams in a row – two different seasons, though”.
Meanwhile, Laver admitted he was saddened by Djokovic’s failure to break his 47-year long Grand Slam record.
Querrey fired 31 aces, compared with seven for Djokovic, and the American’s fastest serve was 134 miles per hour, compared with 122 for the Serbian.
“I don’t want to take anything out of victory for my opponent. I think that the tournament was really weird for me this time”, Kvitova told reporters. “Man, you have Djokovic two sets on the ropes”, said Johnson, who has his own date with destiny at Wimbledon Monday when he faces Roger Federer. The quality of the men’s field, in which the genius Federer defies age, may not be what it was a few years ago when Rafael Nadal was more than just the king of clay.
“I’m more relieved definitely to see that I’m not playing Novak”, added the Croatian, who could have collided with the Serbian in the semis. Given Querrey’s serving prowess, it’s unlikely Raonic could pull off the same kind of comeback after falling down two sets.
Reflecting on the same, Djokovic said that he had been suffering from mental and physical fatigue following his maiden French Open title, which he won by defeating second-ranked Andy Murray.
The No. 3-seeded Federer hadn’t played since Friday, when he was the only man to finish a third-round match.
