Questions abound on offense, defense for Super Bowl champs
The credit for Miller’s presence at training camp lies largely with Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager John Elway, who continued his streak of signing franchise-tagged players to long-term deals. If the season is not lost and the playoffs are within spitting distance, roll with Sanchez for a chance to win a sixth straight AFC West title. You see where we are going with this, right?
“Are you asking me if we’re here to win now or from now on?”
“From a competition standpoint, obviously, as a competitor, you’re not going to say, ‘Yeah, I’ll take the backseat in this, ‘” Lynch said. “We will know a lot more in a week”.
OK, in the AFC West alone, old San Diego gunslinger Philip Rivers still wants a piece of the Broncos and Derek Carr is on the rise in Oakland.
Who will be the next Denver Broncos quarterback? Every fan in Broncos Country is hooked on the drama. Not since the 2000 Baltimore Ravens has a Super Bowl victor lost the top two quarterbacks on its roster. Yes, the champs enjoyed the champagne toasts and a parade and all the perks of finishing last season on top.
Sunday: First day players can practice with full pads. This is the first time that I’ve seen a playbook like that, so I knew it was going to be tough and I knew I was going to be behind.
“I think I’ve already seen something”, he explained.
Cue the calliope music.
It’s far from the worst offensive situation a team can have, but the biggest question remains. It’s up to Sanchez or Siemian to provide clarity for Kubiak.
He knows the expectations he’s faced in the past are nothing compared to those he’ll see as training camp begins and the Broncos head toward their September 8 opener against Carolina. Let the competition begin.
“I don’t know (when the choice will be made)”, Kubiak said. Virgil Green, a fullback/tight end hybrid with 379 yards in 72 games to his name, is the listed starter before camp.
Being able to evaluate as accurately as possible and giving all his players a real shot is Kubiak’s only concern, and not just for his quarterbacks.
It had previously been reported that Siemian and Sanchez were battling for first-team reps with Lynch acting as nothing more than a spectator.
So Kubiak must pick a starting quarterback whom not only he can trust, but a quarterback whom Denver’s stellar defense can believe in. The chances for Denver to win the division are nearly equal to them winding up dead last.
“When I heard the news, I was just thankful that he was OK”, Elway said. When some hotshot quarterback out of Stanford joined the Broncos as a rookie. “It’s going to be there, and he’s aware of them”.
A quarterback who can not handle the pressure of those lofty expectations will not be the quarterback of the Broncos for long.
As the Broncos power through drills Thursday they will open the new football year.
