Questions swirling around Texas coach Strong’s future
Strong seemed to form an impressive bond with recruits and players, but it never translated to wins. “We’ll discuss where our team stands after that”, Perrin said.
His only bowl appearance came in 2014, when he lost to Arkansas in the Texas Bowl.
A source familiar with the decision-making process indicated Sunday that the decision had been made to fire Strong. Nevertheless, Strong said he thought a win against TCU “will help”.
In a surreal scene, Monday’s press conference was attended by dozens of current UT players, who applauded Strong and mobbed him with hugs and high-fives at the end of the event. “I’d like not to think it has, because I’ve been told they would make the decision after the TCU game”.
While Strong may feel like chum with sharks circling in the water, he is still getting support from one large group – his players. Perrin didn’t show up at Strong’s news conference Monday and neither did school President Greg Fenves, who has publicly supported Strong but has been silent on his future since the Kansas loss. “He taught me what it really means to be a man”. After losses to Cal and Oklahoma State, Strong demoted his longtime defensive coordinator, Vance Bedford, and put himself in charge of Texas’ struggling defense. The Texas overtime possession culminated in a terrible overthrow by true freshman quarterback Shane Buchele that was picked off by Kansas defensive back Mike Lee. The Jayhawks may be just 2-9, but the team has shown a huge improvement over the 0-12 season it put together a year ago, which was Beaty’s first in Lawrence. “If we just execute our game plan for both sides of the ball like we did this week, we can get the win”.
After a unexpected – some are calling it downright shocking – loss to the University of Kansas on Saturday, the dominating topic of discussion over the weekend throughout the city was whether or not Charlie Strong will be fired as the University of Texas at Austin head coach.
“If they hit the jackpot, they go a national championship, win the Big 12, they’ll know who got ’em there”, Boyette Jr. said.
Strong’s job status has been questioned from the moment he took over, and after three years, Texas is prepared to prolong the speculation one more week.
Strong is 16-20 in his three seasons at Texas and if fired would be owed $10 million via buyout.
For what it’s worth, Strong believes the result of Friday’s game will carry some weight as to whether or not he’ll be coaching the Longhorns beyond this season.
“In my heart and my spirit, I want him to be here”. The California native has extensive ties to the state of Texas, spending time in the Lone Star State as an assistant at Texas (1999-00), Sam Houston State (2001-04), Texas State (2005-06), Rice (2007-08) and is in his second season as the head coach at Houston.
