Rahal makes last-lap pass to win IndyCar race at Texas
The original running of the Verizon IndyCar Series’ Firestone 600 (km) race at Texas Motor Speedway will be resumed this Saturday night, more than two months after rain caused the event’s postponement. Hinchcliffe thoroughly dominated most of the night and seemed to be driving away in his own private race. Will Power and Ed Carpenter in Chevrolets round-out the current top-five. Josef Newgarden and Conor Daly missed the restart after crashing out on lap 42 to force the race’s first yellow. “It’s just tough having a vehicle like that and leading that many laps, but not the one that counted”.
Most sanctioning agreements are one-year pacts, but Gossage has a good relationship with the current IndyCar management and knew how committed they were to brining exciting racing back to Texas.
It was Power’s fourth win in six races and helped him cut into Simon Pagenaud’s series points lead. The Canadian has been in that lead ever since and will start at the front of a 20-car field at Texas Motor Speedway at 9pm ET tonight.
Newgarden, who trails series leader Simon Pagenaud by 100 points, will finish last in the Firestone 600. I had to dig into my hard drive and remember pack racing again. Penske’s Will Power had the fastest in-race lap, 216.676 miles per hour, short of the record 222.501 turned by Buddy Rice in 2002.
The IndyCar Series will return on September 4, when the series returns to Watkins Glen International for the IndyCar Grand Prix at the Glen. (15) Charlie Kimball, Chevrolet, 247, Running 7.

Takuma Sato of Japan, second from left, watches as track crews work to remove his vehicle from the track after Sato hit the wall at Turn 4 during the IndyCar auto race at Texas Motor Speedway, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, in Fort Worth, . Honda/Chevy? Will it be Hinchcliffe, Pagenaud, Power, Aleshin? Dixon and Carpenter made contact that sent Dixon spinning off track. This is the resumption of the June race, which was postponed after several unsuccessful attempts to dry the 1 1/2-mile track soaked by rain. The last series race with such a long postponement was the 2001 series finale scheduled for the weekend after the September 11 terrorist attacks but pushed back three weeks into October.
Kanaan made a bid for the lead, but Rahal pushed Hinchcliffe to the front, and then Rahal dispatched Hinchcliffe.
The Team Penske trio at the top of the championship ladder most of the season was broken up when Helio Castroneves was sidelined by contact in the last race at Pocono. Certainly we hope that our auto ends up where we are now; in the lead. “After our finish in Pocono, we know we have the speed to do it”. “So we are coming back strong”. Both of our cars looked good there last time with James in the lead and (our) vehicle in third. Said Carpenter while watching a TV replay: “I don’t know what I can do there; it’s my corner”.
Speculation continues that Newgarden, 25, could command a ride with either Team Penske or Chip Ganassi Racing once the championship is sorted, beginning Saturday night on TMS’ 1.5-mile quadoval. “Everything has been going great recently after starting off the season in such a bad place personally”.
“Pocono didn’t go very well, but that happens”, Pagenaud said. “We’d have liked [a big lead] better, but we’re here to put on a good show”.
“P15 is not indicative of the vehicle we had or will have”, he added. We pitted later in the sequence than some of the other teams.
