Raiders apply to move to Los Angeles area
San Diego and Oakland made submissions to the National Football League before the December 30 deadline, but neither plan is considered to be “actionable” by the National Football League right now.
The Chargers walked away from negotiations with the city and county in mid-June.
The NFL on Monday officially acknowledged that the St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers submitted their formal applications for relocation to Los Angeles. The rest of the league’s owners will meet to review their findings the following week, and could decide whether one or two teams will move to Los Angeles for the 2016 season. Just going from my point of view, we did everything that we could to stay first in San Francisco and if that wasn’t possible absolutely in the Bay Area. I’ve lived here 31 years of my life. I have all my friends here.
Murray was most proud of being able to play all 16 games and was pleased to break 1,000 yards, although the yardage came with much more difficulty late in the season and it didn’t always feel as if he were making any headway. So it was very difficult to come to this decision but it’s been 14 years that we’ve been working very hard to try to get something done here. “We’ve had nine different proposals that we’ve made, all of them basically rejected by the city”.
A year ago Tuesday, Rams owner Stan Kroenke unveiled plans for a $1.86-billion stadium in Inglewood that would serve as the centerpiece of a 298-acre entertainment, retail and housing development at the site of the former Hollywood Park racetrack. The Chargers would need a “yes” from at least 24 of the 32 owners to be allowed to move – a supermajority that insiders have said remains elusive for all three teams.
The three are expected to file for relocation Monday, the day after the regular season ends. The Rams and Raiders have also filed fo relocation, the National Football League later announced. Iger will have the final say on the design, construction and branding of the Carson stadium. I think that the only major change we’d see would be the Rams going back to their old color scheme of blue-and-yellow if they return to Los Angeles.
One is choosing Inglewood or Carson as the best stadium site, another is which teams can move. MetLife opened in 2010 and is the world’s most expensive stadium built to date. The St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders did the same, as the three teams jostle for up to two spots in the mega market. The Chargers revealed their intentions first and went so far as to have owner Dean Spanos appear in a video on the team’s website to explain the decision for filing.
With quarterback Derek Carr and coach Jack Del Rio entrenched in their positions, the questions this offseason surround whether the team will play in Oakland or in the Los Angeles area next year. All three teams have until February 15 to do so.
Brees, who has a house in San Diego and trains there in the offseason, was asked if he would be disappointed that he never returned to Qualcomm Stadium after leaving the Chargers.
Monday’s development brings the league one step closer to that possibility.
But they have refused to help pay to build the stadium even as San Diego has offered $350 million – contingent on a public vote – to help keep the Chargers and St. Louis has offered $400 million to keep the Rams.
