Raiders beat Chargers, 23-20, in OT in possible Oakland finale
The St. Louis Rams are seeking to relocate in the Los Angeles area and build a stadium in Inglewood.
This week’s edition of Thursday Night Football doubled as Raiders safety Charles Woodson’s last ever game in Oakland.
When the Chargers then went four-and-out on their ensuing possession, the Raiders had their victory, improving their season mark to 7-8. However, on second-and-29 from the Oakland 20-yard line, quarterback Derek Carr completed a short pass to wide receiver Michael Crabtree, and Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman drew a 15-yard penalty for his hit on a defenseless player, giving the Raiders a first down at the 43. Oakland defeated San Diego 23-20 in overtime. He also scored on a 22-yard run. Although this was Carr’s only touchdown of the game, he scored when it mattered most. It set up a Chargers touchdown.
Eyes got big: Benson Mayowa said he saw Malcolm Smith force a fumble by tight end David Johnson and saw the football fly into the air. He also threw to Roberts for the two-point conversion, and suddenly the Raiders owned a 20-17 lead with 4:42 to play.
The Chargers roared back, quickly marching into Oakland territory. The touchdown came two plays after Dontrelle Inman caught a 12-yard pass on third-and-9 to get the Bolts to the 1. But after they failed to advance, a television replay appeal wiping out a touchdown catch, Lambo missed a 48-yard field goal try and San Diego lost a chance to boost the lead. But on the play, the Raiders’ Khalil Mack was called for defensive holding, and San Diego coach Mike McCoy took points off the board to accept the penalty and take the automatic first down at the 30. Rivers was sacked in the end zone for a safety, the only score of the period. The 39-year-old defender is tied for fifth most interceptions since 1940 with 55 – every player with more INT is in the Hall of Fame: Paul Krause, Emlen Tunnell, Rod Woodson, Night Train Lane.
For three-quarters, the Charles Woodson Farewell Game was anything but a celebration as a sputtering Oakland Raiders offense appeared headed for a loss as five straight three and outs in the second half had the San Diego Chargers in control of the Christmas Eve clash between AFC West rivals.
Cooper was on the field for a insane play to end the first half, though. The Chargers drove 32 yards in seven plays.
Neither offense was very good for the majority of the game, but there were sparks of solid play here and there, beginning with Donald Brown’s 1-yard TD run in the first quarter.
Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime, and the Raiders (7-8) forced a fourth-down incompletion to send the crowd home happy as Woodson took the microphone to lead a “Raiders” chant.
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was 31 of 49 for 277 yards and a touchdown, while the Raiders’ Derek Carr had 204 yards and a TD. “Nobody wants to go out with negative-three yards rushing”.
