Raiders fans hope home finale isn’t the end for Oakland
The Oakland Raiders play host to the San Diego Chargers, in a matchup of two teams potentially moving to Los Angeles in the near future.
The Rams are looking to build their stadium in Inglewood, near Los Angeles International Airport.
Fans wait in line at the security gate before the Oakland Raiders vs. San Diego Chargers game at O.Co Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015.
Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime, and the Raiders (7-8) forced a fourth-down incompletion to send the crowd home happy on Christmas Eve as Woodson took the microphone to lead a “Raiders” chant.
They have one game left in this painful campaign, January 3 in Denver.
On the next play, Michael Crabtree hauled in a touchdown pass from David Carr, who connected with Seth Roberts on a two-point conversion that gave Oakland a 20-17 lead.
Then Woodson made his way off the field for the last time, flashed the “O” sign for Oakland as he headed into the tunnel, and he was gone.
On the final possession, Rivers’ pass on fourth-and-3 from San Diego’s 27-yard line fell helplessly to the turf to end the game.
The injury-riddled Chargers lost several more players to injuries, including cornerback Jason Verrett (hamstring), safety Eric Weddle (groin) and offensive linemen Orlando Franklin (concussion) and Trevor Robinson (concussion). A lot of great players, Hall of Fame players and icons have been a part of that stadium. “When guys go down, someone’s got to step up”. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get it done”.
San Diego rookie Josh Lambo replied with a 47-yard field goal that put the Chargers ahead 17-10 at half-time. And in Week 17, the Raiders will travel to Kansas City with an opportunity to finish with a non-losing record for the first time since 2011. “And it doesn’t make it any easier on us to lose another one like that”.
The Packers have claimed a play-off berth, the next step is clinching the NFC North. The Pack maintained their one-game lead over the Vikings and can lock up the division with a win and a Vikings loss to the Giants on Sunday.
Even though star receiver AMARI COOPER was a no-show tonight with just 2 catches for -9 yards, the Raiders were still able to test the Chargers’ 11th ranked pass defense with Carr’s other eight receiving options as mentioned before. They are now allowing 203 yards to opposing passers over their last three games.
NOTES: Chargers starting WR Stevie Johnson (hip) was inactive for the second consecutive game. San Diego had their emotional (perhaps) final game in San Diego.
Derek Carr completed 23 of 38 passes for 204 yards and one score while also throwing one interception in Thursday’s 23-20 overtime win against the Chargers.
So while this was not quite a regal way to end the Coliseum reign of King Charles I, it was the best the Raiders could do.
