Raiders notebook: Wild sequence ends up pointless for Chargers
The 39-year old Woodson announced earlier this season he was going to retire after 17-years in the NFL. Facing third-and-10 from Oakland’s 20-yard line, Rivers attempted a pass to Danny Woodhead near the sideline but it was incomplete.
But in the end, the night belonged to No.24, who after it was over, shared the moment he made the decision that this would be his final season in the National Football League.
As a team, the Raiders tallied 25 first downs and 286 yards of total offense, out of which, 106 came on the ground and 180 through the air.
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was 31 of 49 for 277 yards and a touchdown, while the Raiders’ Derek Carr had 204 yards and a TD. Not only did he once again do a good job of keeping his players in the fight – even when it seemed dim – but the fact that he tried to punch the game-winner into the end zone by using Charles Woodson on offense was priceless.
The Chargers got on the board first when running back DONALD BROWN used his own fortitude and a key block by left guard ORLANDO FRANKLIN, to get into the end zone from 1 yard out. “It means so much because of how much he’s helped me, how much he’s pushed me, how much he’s taught me, just about being a pro”, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr said of getting the win for Woodson.
“I’m just ecstatic to be part of the C-Wood era”, Roberts said. “You see the lights and camera around him constantly, and you know how he’s loved around here and this is a big deal that it’s his last game”.
That forced a 53-yard field goal that Josh Lambo made.
The defense delivered throughout another night in which the Raiders offense struggled.
Carr shook off a bad night to throw a dime, a 3-yard pass to Crabtree perfectly placed over the defender. Fans hold up signs for retiring Oakland Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson and for the Raiders to stay in Oakland during the first half of an NFL football game between the Raiders and the San Diego Chargers in Oakland, C…
That was a rare blip for a Raiders defense that had another strong outing, particularly in the second half.
The score came shortly after San Diego’s David Johnson fumbled after making a catch and Malcom Smith recovered it and raced deep into Chargers territory.
Cooper played sparingly in this game, catching just two passes for 10 yards. Hayden committed a costly penalty to put the Chargers in position to kick the game-tying field goal. “This was just one where we were going on the fly”.
The Chargers have not won a game in their division in more than a year and have gone 0-7 during that span.
The game was played on the 38th anniversary of the Raiders’ famed “Ghost to the Post” double-overtime playoff win against the Colts in Baltimore. Latavius Murray capped the nine-play, 77-yard possession with a 22-yard touchdown run. Rivers had no answer for Sebastian Janikowski’s 31-yard field goal, though, failing to convert a fourth down on the Chargers’ first series of the extra frame.2.
