Raids Across The US Target Undocumented Immigrants
The crackdown by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was launched in at least seven states, including “target-rich” areas like Texas, where almost 1.5 million undocumented immigrants were living, according to the most recent statistics in 2014.
“Reports like that create panic, and they put communities and law enforcement personnel in unnecessary danger”, Marlin said.
Hundreds of undocumented immigrants have been arrested across the United States this week, in a first large-scale raid after President Donald Trump ordered to crack down on them. If true, this would mark a departure from the Obama administration. Immigration enforcement were made at the homes and workplaces of the illegal aliens.
ICE confirms more than 160 arrests of foreign nationals in the last five days in the Los Angeles area, sparking concerns that a roundup under Trump’s executive order on the interior had begun. “He is also a priority due to a final order of removal issued by a federal immigration judge in July 2014”, the statement read. “Since my parents can’t do it, I’ll do it for them”. Many of those arrested had prior felony convictions for “serious or violent offenses” including child sex crimes and assault. According to the Post, ICE officials carried out raids, traffic stops and checkpoints in at least six states – including Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, New York and Kansas – on Thursday and Friday.
“This operation that we conducted is on par with similar operations that were done in the past”, Marin said. He said he would be following up to make sure the actions were targeting the worst offenders. “ICE has a reputation for being one of the worst law enforcement agencies in the country”, he said. “These are existing, established fugitive operations teams”. Her father, despite not having a criminal record and not being the criminal targeted by the raid, was picked up, something Salas said isn’t – or hadn’t been – typical behavior by ICE agents.
Those incidents came a day after Arizona mother Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos, who had turned up to an ICE facility for a routine check-in, was suddenly taken into custody by authorities.
But Irasema Fonseca, a UA junior who has interned for the resource center and spoke out in favor of sanctuary campus designations at the regents meeting, said she doesn’t agree that enough is being done for the immigrant community on the UA campus. “They instill fear in the community, and they make everyday people fear for their lives”. A government aide familiar with the raids said it is possible the predominantly daytime operations – a departure from the Obama administration’s night raids – meant to “send a message to the community that the Trump deportation force is in effect”.
Fellow California Rep. Lou Correa tweeted he was “deeply concerned” about the actions as well.
At around 6 p.m. yesterday, the Alexandria Police Department reached out to ICE after receiving inquiries from the public about alleged raids in the City. “To that end, ICE’s routine immigration enforcement actions are ongoing”. The statement even suggests people walk away from agents, calmly, if they’re not being detained or arrested. This follows Trump’s executive order making it clear that any undocumented migrant could be a priority for deportation.
