Rain cancels NASCAR Truck Race until Saturday morning
Fort Kent’s Austin Theriault finished 13th in the American Ethanol E15 125 Camping World Truck Series race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois on Saturday.
The second-generation NASCAR driver was running second behind Kyle Larson when Larson ran out of gas two laps from the finish.
It’s Nemechek’s first win in 23 outings in the series, and it makes him the fourth youngest victor in the history of the championship – only Cole Custer, Erik Jones and Chase Elliott were younger when they won. That left SWM-NEMCO Motorsports’ John Hunter Nemechek as the last man standing on the same strategy, and even though the engine coughed and wheezed itself dry in the final seconds he was still able to ride his stroke of good fortune all the way to victory lane for his first win in the Truck Series. Timothy Peters was third, Suarez ended up fourth after pitting and Johnny Sauter was fifth. We’ve had a few close calls, but I can’t thank everyone enough. Although Joe Nemechek has 20 career victories, none were in the Truck Series. The odds of running the Camping World Truck Series race Friday night are less than 25 percent. His previous best finish in the series was third last month at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
Nemechek turned 18 in June and drives for a team fielded by his father, journeyman Joe Nemechek. Daytona track president Joie Chitwood said Saturday the section of fencing ripped away in Dillon’s crash has been repaired, but an analysis of the accident showed the fence did its job. “He just kept telling me to coast”, Nemechek said.
“It’s just been an incredible day, an incredible day”.
Erik Jones: Extends points lead after sixth-place finish, but it’s still a tight one over Tyler Reddick (10 points). – John Hunter Nemechek, on the gas-preserving radio message he got from crew chief Gere Kennon.
