Rain suspends play Saturday at PGA Championship
Phil Mickelson thinks a major championship record low round will be shot at Baltusrol Golf Club over the last two rounds of the PGA Championship and that someone might take it as low as 61. “It was a battle all day”.
Day was at the 18th green to congratulate Walker after the tension-packed putt. Thursday was the day I played well. “It’s a very special moment to be able to celebrate on the 18th green”.
There were 10 golfers, including Walker and Day, who played 36 holes Sunday after the third round was suspended Saturday after heavy rains saturated the course.
The left-hander, who won the PGA the last time it was played here in 2005, got his round of 2-under 68 started a little better than he did his second round.
That dropped Day to nine-under, where he was tied with British Open victor Henrik Stenson of Sweden (through two holes), American Brooks Koepka (four holes) and South African Branden Grace, who charged up the leaderboard by going three-under through 12.
More thunderstorms are forecast Sunday and Monday, so Kerry Haigh, PGA of America’s chief championships officer, made a decision to keep third-round pairings for the fourth round and start it early to try and finish on Sunday.
As he was finishing, Harris English began his third round by missing his tee shot so far to the right that he couldn’t play it and wound up making a double bogey. “It’s normally the mind that gives up before the body… the body is normally fine to play two rounds of golf”.
The PGA Championship resumed Sunday with minimal odds that someone will be holding the Wanamaker Trophy by the end of the day.
Mickelson said he believed the first 62 in major championship history would be recorded this weekend.
The course played easy for many early Saturday, as birdies were out there to be had all over the course.
He rolled his first putt three feet past, leaving himself with a testing par putt, which he sank under enormous pressure in the fading light for his first major triumph.
Normally, a player who is in contention for a tournament bases at least some of his play on what those around him are doing.
After playing the sixth through the 11th at even par, Watson bogeyed the 12th, 13th and 15th to move back to even par.
Walker backed off an eight-foot birdie putt twice at the par-5 17th then rolled the right-breaking putt into the bottom of the cup to reach 14 under.
“But now all those things are starting to come back together”.
“Jason is a true champion – eagle at 18, I would expect nothing less”. He shot par-70 in his third round. I think we have sort of a similar forecast for tomorrow (Sunday). “I can’t be disappointed”. Streb’s 63 was the 30th shot at a major but he was the 28th player to achieve the feat, Fiji’s Vijay Singh and Australian Greg Norman having done it twice.
