Rams’ Bailey In Critical Condition After Shooting
The St. Louis Rams receiver’s relative, Antwan Reeves was also injured in the shooting.
Two of passengers were Bailey’s children, WFOR-TV reported.
Bailey, 25, was in critical but stable condition Wednesday, his team said in an online statement. The shooting took place in Miami Gardens, Fla.
St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher said Bailey’s surgery took between four and six hours.
Reeves reportedly was behind the wheel of the auto, and when he saw the vehicle arrive and open fire he jumped into action and shielded the children in the seat behind them.
He racked up 17 receptions while playing in all of his team’s games during his rookie campaign, then had another 30 receptions (one for a touchdown) past year.
That sentiment was echoed by San Diego Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett, who wrote, “Prayers out to my dawg Stedman Bailey man”. A Rams source told ESPN’s Nick Wagoner that the team believes Bailey’s injuries are not life-threatening.
“The first instinct was to pray for him, pray for the doctors that his surgery is successful and really that he would heal fast”, Laurinaitis said after practice.
Several of Bailey’s Rams teammates tweeted Wednesday after hearing the news of the shooting.
The 25-year-old wide receiver is in his third season in the National Football League, and was the fifth leading receiver for the Rams this season.
While the situation with Bailey is still at a very critical and serious point, it’s relieving to know that he was able to make it through his surgery well. During his time as a Mountaineer, Bailey amassed 210 receptions for 3,218 yards along with 41 touchdowns.
Bailey was also suspended four games in 2014 for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, but that suspension was ultimately shortened to two games. He was fined for pulling a stunt after the lone score after using the ball as a pillow and lying down in the end zone.
