Rams Drop Preseason Opener 18-3 to Raiders

Carr’s day ended in a disappointing fashion.

Carr himself looked fine until a telegraphed throw in the red zone wound up an interception for the St. Louis Rams and a bitter end to what should have been a touchdown drive.

Carr and the first-team offense got a second drive after their promising first possession resulted in a 44-yard Sebastian Janikowski field goal. Foles completed his first two passes to Lance Kendricks and Tavon Austin for 61 yards before the offense stalled.

Another Cooper catch put Oakland at the 26-yard line, but on third down a fade toward the end zone to Crabtree was short and Johnson batted it down to force the field goal. Running back Latavius Murray carried six times for 35 yards. Del Rio conceded the nitpicking would leave coaches “agonized” as they identified errors Saturday not apparent to the naked eye. The offensive line played very well. The Raiders handled him with kid gloves while he found his way. Murray was explosive and ran with big authority. “Ninety percent of our coaches have played in the NFL, that’s something special, you can really go and talk to somebody and get a game like situation conversation with someone who actually did the same thing you did”. Both attempts to add two points on two separate touchdowns were disappointing. Second-stringer Christian Ponder went 6 for 9 for 59 yards and a 3-yard TD pass to Andre Holmes.

Again, Friday’s showing was just an exhibition game against a dumbed-down St. Louis Rams defense. After leaving the Raiders, he played for one more season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Khalil Mack twice brought pressure that helped produce a sack.

The first time a Justin Ellis takedown was wiped out by offsetting penalties. Ben Heeney, Shelby Harris, Stacy McGee and others played very well yesterday. And if they were to get in bed with Kroenke, they would send “hypocritical” to new heights, because I’m 100 percent sure they don’t like the Inglewood site (not exactly Beverly Hills and with no freeway access). We came back out the next drive and played pretty good. I thought we moved the ball well. Carr, Crabtree and Richardson initially joined the huddle for that drive before exiting the field.

“It was awesome”, Oakland quarterback Derek Carr told reporters after the game.

“We were just on different pages”, Carr said of the interception. “Those kinds of things you can’t do in practice”. In the end, the three best were Brice Butler, Matt McGloin, and the defense for the Raiders in the first win of the year.

To me, I think it’s important to keep an even keeled perspective on what’s going on with these two in Oakland.

Spanos hardly is a pauper, but among these wealthy princes – especially Kroenke, married to Sam Walton’s daughter, the richest of them all (estimated at $12.5 billion) – he doesn’t have what his fellow owners want – enough dough to fatten their greedy pie.
