Rams’ Jared Goff To Make NFL Debut Against Dolphins
After watching from the sideline through nine games – a lot of them losses – the former Cal star has finally seized the starting job.
Fans have been more than ready for a change at quarterback. We definitely have a big-time job to do this week, just like every week. That additional learning curve persuaded the Rams to be patient, but Keenum has struggled along with the Los Angeles offense, repeatedly failing to make big plays in important situations.
This might not bode too well for Goff.
Until Tuesday morning, when Rams head coach Jeff Fisher sat his quarterbacks down and made the move. The Rams are ranked 31st in total offense and last in points scored. He threw 1,567 passes through three collegiate seasons, but Cal’s “Bear Raid” system bears little resemblance to Rams offensive coordinator Rob Boras’ multiple tight end sets. Keenum said that even though he was aware of Goff’s presence and what it meant, he didn’t look over his shoulder this season and “took ownership” of the Rams’ offense. “We’re going to get it right”.
While Fisher has been resistant to making a change at quarterback, it’s hard to argue against it after Case Keenum’s performance in the Rams’ 9-6 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday. He has completed 61 percent of his passes, and has a quarterback rating of 46.4.
“Our information is limited as far as what he’s put on tape at this level”, Gase said. There’s been communication along the way, it still doesn’t make it any easier for him when he ultimately finds out, but he’s handled it well and he’ll continue to handle it well.
Jared Goff’s long wait is over.
“I just felt this was the appropriate time to turn it over to him”, said Rams coach Jeff Fisher. “We’re not scaling the offense down”. He takes a shot.
Goff will have to overcome those offensive obstacles, but he did enough at California to merit his No. 1 pick status by throwing for 4,719 yards and 43 touchdowns in his final collegiate season.
“Those guys are very experienced, but they have more than just those two”, Goff said, echoing Fisher. “It makes it tough when you have this limited information”. Is he gonna be able to stand in there and throw the ball when he gets hit? “He’s gonna have some growing pains here and there”.
“I expect to do whatever it takes to win”, finished Goff.
Cam Newton said National Football League players are “owed” the opportunity to celebrate after big plays.
In what is truly an unsurprising development, Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole is reporting that there is concern within the Los Angeles Rams’ organization that rookie No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff is not ready to play.
“It’s been a long time, it feels like, since I’ve gotten out there and played”, Goff said. We’re all competitors, and Case is a competitive person.
Keenum is scheduled to meet with reporters on Wednesday.
