Rand Paul Ally Indicted For Buying Support for Father Ron
John Tate, the PAC’s founder, and Jesse Benton, husband of Ron Paul’s granddaughter and current head of America’s Liberty, have been indicted on six charges – including conspiracy – related to the Sorenson affair.
The DOJ indictment alleges that Jesse Benton (the leader of America’s Liberty PAC), John Tate and Dimitrios Kesari covered up payments totaling $73,000 to Iowa state Sen. Kent Sorenson to switch his support in the 2012 race from Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann to Ron Paul in exchange for money.
Three former campaign aides to Rep. Ron Paul have been indicted for a scheme to bribe an Iowa lawmaker to endorse Paul in the run-up to the 2012 Iowa Caucus.
Benton is also charged with making false statements to the FBI, while Kesari has been charged with obstruction of justice.
Benton went on to serve as campaign manager for Kentucky Sen.
Rand Paul’s campaign sounds like a miserable slog to nowhere. Sen.
Benton has reportedly said he will seek “expedient review” so that the charges can be completed within two months.
The Justice Department says the former staffers wrote off the payments as audio-visual expenses through a film production company and a second company controlled by Sorensen.
“Mr. Benton is eager to get before an impartial judge and jury who will quickly recognize this for what he believes it is: Character assassination for political gain”, he said.
According to the indictment, the three were charged with conspiracy, falsifying records to obstruct a contemplated investigation, and causing submission of false campaign expenditure reports.
“You know, I think one of the considerations when you look at any of this is that we are with an administration where there has been a lot of politically motivated investigations”, Paul told the station. He was also campaign manager for a time during Republican Senator Mitch McConnell’s re-election campaign last year, but resigned two days after Sorenson pleaded guilty. “Additionally, these actions are from 2012 and have nothing to do with our campaign”. In a statement, Ron Paul questioned the timing of the indictment, and suggested it was done to sabotage his son’s presidential ambitions.
“I am extremely disappointed in the government’s decision”, Paul said in a statement.
Former Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), the father of Rand Paul, is a libertarian folk hero, who ran for President in both 2008 and 2012.
Rand Paul canceled a radio call-in appearance scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, SiriusXM radio said, citing votes in the Senate – which didn’t take any Wednesday.
