Randy Quaid Due in Vermont Courtroom, Awaits Extradition After Being Accused
Randy Quaid and his Canadian wife, Evi, are being held on $500,000 bail by Vermont authorities after being seized Friday when they crossed into the United States.
As they tried to drive into the States at the Highgate Springs port of entry Friday night, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents realized who they were.
Quaid was to appear in court Monday on a fugitive from justice charge.
Quaid, 65, and his wife were allowed to stay in Canada beginning in 2011, with Quaid’s wife granted Canadian citizenship since her father was born there. They claimed killers were after them, describing them as lawyers and accountants, who allegedly caused late actor Heath Ledger’s death back in 2008, when the actor overdosed on prescription drugs.
“It was not immediately clear why the arrest warrants were issued, but Quaid recently said they were related to a longstanding dispute over a property in Santa Barbara”, Reuters reports. Evi Quaid got citizenship; Randy Quaid’s effort for permanent residency was denied.
Actor Randy Quaid has had his share of problems in the past few years.
The Quaids had separate court appearances Monday – she in Burlington, near the state women’s prison where she is being held, and he 28 miles north in St. Albans, near the men’s prison where he is locked up.
Randy Quaid is accused of defrauding an innkeeper in Santa Barbara, resulting in $10,000 in unpaid bills. He asked that in the meantime, the Vermont court defer to the bail set in California.Langrock said its likely the charges in California will be dropped, and that he believes the case has been blown out of proportion. If were talking about $500,000 bail for breaking a mirror, thats an unusual situation.
“The court has nothing that validates anything that he (Quaid) is saying”, Arms said. “It is the intent of the Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office that Mr. and Mrs. Quaid, either voluntarily or if necessary by a warrant from the Governor of California, go through the judicial process”.
Randy Quaid, the brother of actor Dennis Quaid, is known for the 1973 film “The Last Detail”, “Independence Day“, and the “National Lampoon’s Vacation” franchise, among others.
