Rangers boss Mark Warburton keen to learn from St Johnstone reverse
O’Halloran made the first and scored the third goal in Saints’ 3-1 victory and said: “Rangers are doing well in their division but we proved a different test for them”. “We did it once in training and it didn’t go too well”, said Lappin.
However, their winning streak was brought to an end by Premiership outfit St. Johnstone when they defeated the Gers 3-1 at Ibrox on Tuesday.
David Wotherspoon’s corner from the left found the unmarked Simon Lappin at the edge of the box and he smashed a wonderfully-executed left-foot drive past Wes Foderingham. A bit like Pep Guardiola at Barcelona or even Ronny Deila at Celtic, Warburton has a stubborn faith in his system but it will be instructive to see if he alters his principles the next time top flight opposition come into view.
Wright continued: “We’d worked on set plays. We have a conscientious group of lads and that is what we are all about”. We had worked on that yesterday. If you look at the way our full-backs play you could say we play 2-5-3 as it is.
“If he gets it right, Michael can cause anybody problems because he’s got real pace”.
“We can do some aspects better, but on the whole, it was a disappointing result”.
“Rangers have enjoyed a lot of possession in games this season but we have players here who are comfortable on the ball and that will be important”.
“Not many people would have thought we’d come here and win, given the form Rangers have been in and the form we’ve been in, which has been patchy”, he told BBC Scotland. The players know that.
Warburton made a staunch defence of his players, claiming that Rangers had been somewhat unfortunate to suffer defeat on Tuesday night and refuting questions about his side’s confidence.
He admits his side’s defending was not good enough but he insists there is no need to panic after their first defeat of the season.
“We have to take that 90-minute performance into the games coming up”.
“Tuesday was a harsh lesson for them as we conceded three goals and gave ourselves a mountain to climb”. I am pleased with the chances we are creating and how clinical we have been but the little mistakes have to be eradicated. Tonight wasn’t our night.
“We had one bad half of football early in the season at Brentford and we referred back to that every single week – if we drop our standards that will happen”. That could be the equivalent here, We will learn from that first half.
