Rappers NWA inductees in rock hall
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame made the big revelation about its latest class on its official website, and this year, classic rock ruled supreme, represented by Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple and Miller.
N.W.A.’s quest for induction its fourth time on the ballot may have been aided by the hit bio-pic “Straight Outta Compton”, which was released this year and has so far grossed more than $161. “Rap is a piece of rock & roll, but there’s also a piece of soul, a piece of R&B, a piece of blues – all of that music that comes before it”.
“With so many lineups, it’s a minefield”, says drummer Ian Paice, the only member to serve in every incarnation of the band.
The induction comes amid renewed criticism of police tactics after a series of killings of African-Americans.
“Our impact is to show the people that you have a voice”.
N.W.A. members Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella will be inducted for their contributions and heavy influence on hip hop.
Of course, Yes – who, like Deep Purple, have been around since 1968 – is long overdue.
Though some overhauls and changes have been made to help ensure younger voters and more women have the opportunity to vote the musical artists who will join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this year, the voters have still played it safe, for the most part, with the possible exception of N.W.A.
The 30th annual induction ceremony will take place in New York City in April.
This band is best known for it’s infamous guitar lick on “Smoke on the Water”.
Klipsch Audio, a leading global speaker and headphone manufacturer, is a strategic partner and presenting sponsor of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and its Induction Ceremony events.
Deep Purple joins two other British groups already in the Hall of Fame – Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath – that together spawned hard rock.
Not coincidentally, three of the inductees – Chicago, Deep Purple and Miller – finished in the top five in fan voting.
Cheap Trick’s “Live at Budokan” is seen as one of the greatest live albums of all time.
Miller, Cheap Trick and Chicago all won the first year they were nominated. Steve Miller and Cheap Trick are first time nominees. The influential disco band Chic, fronted by Nile Rodgers, also failed to earn enough votes despite its 10th nomination. The band’s classic tunes include “Surrender”, “I Want You To Want Me”, “Dream Police” and the #1 hit, “The Flame”.
