Now, Jim Irsay has spent $2.1m (£1.4m) on the last piece of his project to reunite the Beatles piece by piece – Ringo Starr’s drum kit.
But Starr wasn’t the only Beatle to smash the skins on this kit, the drums were also used to record Pul McCartney’s first solo record titled McCartney.
Starr’s White Album carried a pre-auction estimate of $40,000 to $60,000, a number that was easily shattered during bidding. Julien’s Auctions, located in Beverly Hills, is handling the auction, which also includes more than 800 items from Starr’s life and career. The Colts owner and rock memorabilia enthusiasts previously purchased high-profile instruments like Bob Dylan’s 1965 Newport Folk Festival guitar, John Lennon’s 1966 “Paperback Writer” Gretsch guitar and Les Paul’s “Black Beauty.”
The auction ends Saturday with two sessions, one in the morning and later in the afternoon, that will feature more Ringo’s Beatles and All-Starr Band years memorabilia.
The record is expected to sell for up to $50,000 (£30,000).
He already had the guitars that belonged to John, Paul and George.
Speaking about letting some of his treasured possessions go, he said: “Some of the stuff, it’s a real surprise that we still had it because it’s been in storage for so long”.
