Rashford to Man United’s rescue in Europa League
Manchester United demolished Danish side Midtjylland by 5-1 in their Europa league clash.
But Van Gaal’s men rallied rather than wilted under the Old Trafford floodlights, with Nikolay Bodurov’s first-half own goal followed after the break by two from teenage debutant Marcus Rashford.
With Anthony Martial complaining of a hamstring injury in the warm-up, Rashford was thrown into the starting XI at the last minute and enjoyed a dream debut, scoring twice as United came from behind to progress to the last 16.
Under-fire Van Gaal had bizarrely called for his United players to be “horny” in the build-up to the game and they responded in fine style, displaying great attacking penetration in the second half as the visitors wilted under the pressure.
The 34-year-old joined United from Tottenham for £18.6million back in 2006 and has gone on to win five Premier League titles in nine years with the club.
“Arsenal away from home was the only time this season we have lost 3-0”.
It was Joe Riley’s first game at Old Trafford and Marcus’s debut as well and we couldn’t have asked for more from them.
“I can not say that but it is not so heavy as everybody thinks, but you never know”, Van Gaal said.
Van Gaal was encouraged by Depay’s performance against Midtjylland and said Morgan Schneiderlin played his best game to date. “I must give compliments to my players”.
However, De Gea has responded well to treatment and van Gaal has now confirmed that he expects his number one to be back between the sticks against Arsenal on Sunday. So I take also a risk to do that, but I think that I have to do that now with 15 minutes and then 30 minutes and like that and I hope we can build him up. Van Gaal though was very pleased that Martial stood down himself to not risk a far bigger injury.
“Now, because of that, you see a lot of youngsters who can show their quality, and you can also win”.
“I’ve said already a lot of times that that is fantastic but you have to be consistent”, he said. He’s only 20 and he’s played all the matches so it’s not so remarkable.
A section where family and friends of the players sit, United supporter looked particularly familiar as he rushed towards Rashford to embrace United’s new goalscoring hero.
