Ravens return blocked field goal to beat Browns
The Ravens have absolutely been cursed this season.
Following an interception of Ravens quarterback Matt Schaub by Tramon Williams with 55 seconds remaining, Davis moved the Browns into field-goal range with a 7-yard scramble to the Ravens 33-yard line. However, Brent Urban, in his first National Football League game, blocked Travis Coons’ 51-yard attempt.
Will Hill returned a last-gasp blocked field goal attempt for a touchdown as the Baltimore Ravens scored a dramatic 33-27 win over the Cleveland Browns on Monday.
Karlos Dansby had a 52-yard pick-six of Schaub to put the Browns up 20-17 with 12 minutes, 16 seconds remaining in the third quarter. McCown’s always getting hurt (his lingering rib injury was why the Browns dressed three quarterbacks), and no wonder: his line can’t protect him, and his running game is useless.
That set the stage for the dramatic finish.
For your viewing pleasure, enjoy the view of one fan who figured he was about to catch a thrilling Browns victory on his cell phone, only to realize he was catching a microcosm of the life of a Browns fan.
Most of the game’s coverage had to do with the Browns third string quarterback, Johnny Manziel. The lone first half touchdown came on a Josh McCown pass to Marlon Moore, which reminded fans of all the players ahead of Dwayne Bowe on the depth chart. The way the league promotes parity, every team should be able to turn it around in a year or two with just a few good decisions.
Despite that, the first half was compelling, if not well played. Hill picked up the deflection and returned it 64 yards up the sideline for the game-winning score. Playing in his second game as a Raven, Kaelin Clay started the scoring with a punt return for a touchdown.
But as Cleveland attempted to get closer for Coons, who made his first 18 attempts this season, Davis wasted valuable time because of a communication issue with the sideline.
When Hill scooped up the ball, he only had a couple Browns to beat. He also had two tackles from scrimmage. Schaub then completed a fourth-down conversion to fullback Kyle Juszczyk before throwing a 15-yard dart to wide receiver Kamar Aiken for a go-ahead touchdown. The 14-point lead was the Ravens’ biggest of the season, but it was extremely shortlived. McCown finished 21 of 38 for 212 yards and a TD.
