Rays’ Erasmo Ramirez loses no-hitter in eighth inning, gets no-decision
This was following the Yankees and Blue Jays series where the Yankees had a 3.5 game deficit after Sunday’s contest.
As joyous as the Yankees’ clubhouse had been after Monday night’s two-out, none-on, ninth-inning rally resulted in a 4-1 comeback win, Tuesday’s postgame atmosphere was library quiet.
The Yankees, of course, must take care of business this week against the Rays, before taking on the seriously-hot New York Mets – eight straight wins entering Tuesday – before their final regular season showdown against Toronto at Rogers Centre starting the 21st.
Unfortunately, after encountering and overcoming the substance issues, his second demon came into play: injuries. He continues to make them forget about his past transgressions with his current effort.
Odorizzi allowed a first-inning home run to Alex Rodriguez and a fourth-inning two-run homer to Greg Bird that bounced high off the batter’s eye in center field. On a quick side note, that home run marked number 686 and hit number 3,061 of A-Rod’s career, moving him past Hall of Famer Craig Biggio for 21st on the all-time hits list.
But Nick Rumbelow gave up a home run to Nick Franklin in the 6th, and the Yankees never recovered. “It’s nice to be the beneficiary of it, but he came up with the big hit when we needed it and that’s been kind of tough to find this year”.
CC Sabathia had a strong start for the Yankees, giving up three hits over 6 2-3 scoreless innings. He flew to left as Gomes picked up his first save of the season.
Tampa Bay stopped a 21-inning scoring drought and took a 1-0 lead on Logan Forsythe’s eighth-inning RBI double. “As good as I’ve ever seen”.
Heathcott, who credits his born-again Christianity for his sobriety, was expected to being contributing to the Yankees this year, but suffered a quad strain just six games into his first call-up in May. Just four days prior, Heathcott, along with Gary Sanchez, were the second wave of players to be added to the Yankees roster because of September call-ups. “It’s cool”, the right-hander said.
Yankees: Manager Joe Girardi said CF Jacoby Ellsbury, in a 1 for 29 slide, is physically fine. X-rays were negative, and he is considered day-to-day. Rays LHP Jake McGee threw a third bullpen session Monday.
MISCELLANY: Boxing legend Jake LaMotta, subject of the movie Raging Bull, was on the field pregame. LaMotta, 93, also took part in a program at the Ted Williams Museum, which is located at Tropicana Field. But the Yankees couldn’t get him home, and when Justin Wilson allowed a run in the bottom of the 8th, it looked like the Yankees would lose 1-0, like it was a soccer game. After last night’s game, you could be forgiven for dreaming big and thinking the Yankees could pull off another insane comeback.
