Rdio Is Shutting Down December 22nd
As part of the acquisition, the Rdio service will be shutting down worldwide on December 22, 2015 at approximately 5pm PST. Now, with its dying breaths, Rdio has made its users’ listening archives available to view before it shuts down forever.
After that, Pandora stepped in to buy the company’s assets for US$75 million. Thankfully that leaves users with one full week to import their playlists into Spotify should they choose to migrate to that service. Despite a fiercely competitive market, Rdio managed to gain some popularity, but the competition became too harsh for the company, and news of Rdio filing for bankruptcy and a Pandora buyout became publicly known a couple weeks back.
On its export page, Rdio says the files it’s allowing users to download are metadata that’ll make it easier for users to restore their collections in their next music streaming service.
Users will be able to keep their playlists just as they were on Spotify, and any liked artists on Rdio will similarly be followed on Spotify, with saved tracks and albums also maintained.
“We’re honored to have connected you with the music you love”. A week later, Rdio canceled all subscriptions and closed its service to new sign-ups, and promised more details to come regarding its winding down, including its definite shutdown date and information on how to export Rdio user data to another service.
