#ReadySetRio: Olympics: China’s Sun Yang wins Olympic 200m freestyle gold
On Monday, French swimmer Camille Lacourt made a decision to fan the flames.
Sun Yang responded to taunts about his doping history in emphatic fashion on Monday by becoming the first Chinese swimmer to win the Olympic men’s 200 metres freestyle gold medal.
Camille Lacourt of France reacts after competing in the men’s 100m backstroke heats of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Swimming events.
“When I see the 200m podium I want to be sick”. I have the impression I am looking at athletics, with two or three doped in each final.
“Sun Yang, he p***** purple”, Lacourt said in an interview with French radio station RMC.
A Chinese state newspaper described Australia as “uncivilized” and “Britain’s offshore prison” as it rushed to Sun’s defence after he was labelled a drugs cheat by Australian 400 freestyle gold medallist Mack Horton.
“I do not like not being on the podium”. I prefer to remember the crowd that cheered when we went out.
“I am very sad to see my sport going this way”, added Lacourt.
Yang, who cruised into the final with the fastest time, defeated South Africa’s Chad Le Clos thanks to his strength in the final length Monday.
Sun was revealed two years ago to have secretly served a three-month suspension for using a banned stimulant.
After the race, Sun was asked about his friendship with Marculescu, the FINA boss, and replied that he had been a figure of support since the controversy in Rio erupted. It displeases me to be beaten by a Chinese. “I hope this friendship will last”.
