Real Madrid defeats Juventus in UEFA Champions League final
Kwadwo Asamoah missed out on another Champions League trophy after his Juventus side got clobbered 4-1 by Real Madrid on Saturday in Cardiff.
Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 20th minute and became the first player ever to score in three different Champions League finals. They put more goals past Juventus in 90 minutes than the Italian champions had conceded in their previous 12 Champions League games.
Since the Champions League began (in name since 1993, in format since 1992), there have been quite a lot of teams – from European giants to miniscule one-hit wonders from small leagues.
“I had a spectacular end to the season”.
“It’s incredible. It’s another wonderful season. Real have more experience, but if Juve are prepared to play their game then they can win”.
“In 2015 we got to the final and deserved it but perhaps we didn’t’t feel confident enough because we had come out of a number of years of struggling in the Champions League. It’s been a brilliant season”.
Juventus had the first real crack at goal as Miralem Pjanic struck a volley from the edge of the area only for Keylor Navas to make a good save low to his right to keep the scoreline unchanged. “He believed in us, and in the second half we showed that we were better”.
Juventus has not won the competition since 1996 but having already overcome Barcelona on the way to the final in Cardiff, Massimiliano Allegri will be confident of making it a Spanish double.
But their defeat means they have now lost their last five Champions League finals.
“I want to keep going like that and win lots of trophies”. Check out the latest episode of SportsJOE Live – We have footballing maverick Stephen Hunt on the couch, joined by Ronan O’Gara and Dion Fanning.
Welshman Gareth Bale, who faced a race to be fit, received a rapturous ovation after coming on as a second-half substitute in his home city.
“We have made history. We needed confidence at half-time and we had to take our chances, which we did”, he said.
