Real Madrid kicked out of Copa del Rey for fielding ineligible player
Cheryshev scored the opening goal in Wednesday game.
“After analysing what happened, the penalty for three yellow cards should not be considered effective because nobody told the player of his punishment, as stated in Article 41 [of competition regulations]”.
“Real Madrid did not know about it as we were not told by the player, Villarreal or the federation”.
“This situation required a speedy decision because there was no time to speculate”, he had said.
Fran Canal, the club’s legal adviser, said: “We will respect Real Madrid, but our fans and our members always want the best for Cadiz”. However, Cheryshev was technically ineligible to play due to yellow card accumulation that dated back to the prior season, when he was on loan from Real Madrid and played for Spanish side Villareal. Madrid has not been able to anything more than analyse the nature of this reality and we believe the suspension was not done effectively.
We found out at half-time and for this, I insist, we substituted him to show our good faith.
That was backed up by Emilio Butragueno, Madrid’s director of worldwide relations, who said: “The club were not notified about the sanction”.
“The penalty Cheryshev was given while playing for Villarreal is ineffective in our view, no one had mentioned the sanction to the player'” the Madrid president said.
“We had no notification from the RFEF or Villarreal”.
RFEF rules specify that if a club field an ineligible player, they face disqualification from the competition – provided the opposing club lodges an objection. The error, as reported by Guillem Balague, has resulted in the Spanish Giants being kicked out the competition.
According to ABC, Real Madrid will likely appeal the ruling.
He explained: “We actually have a match delegate who is responsible for the line-ups and the referees, and actually checking if there are any suspensions, so I’m sure he’ll be blamed”.
