Realistic Options for the San Diego Chargers and Joey Bosa
The San Diego Chargers have withdrawn their contract offer to first-round draft pick Joey Bosa and will restructure a new deal that takes into account his absence from the team.
Those figures are expected to decline in any future offers, as the team says it believes that, with Ayrault’s latest rejection, Bosa’s chance to contribute over a full 16-game season became jeopardized, given all the practice and preseason time Bosa has missed.
Our contract discussions and offers to the representatives of Joey Bosa have been both fair and structurally consistent with the contracts of every other Chargers player.
The Chargers reportedly agreed to pay 85 percent of Bosa’s $18 million signing bonus, but did not budge on the offset language common in rookie deals.
As for Bosa, a statement from his representatives Wednesday night read, “At this point, all we can do is continue to fight for a fair contract on behalf of our client, as we do for all of our clients”.
The Chargers are known to be one of the cheapest organizations in the National Football League so they will probably not budge from either of the two conditions.
It’s not clear whether Bosa, the No. 3 pick overall, is willing to sit out the season. It’s tough to even pinpoint where he would land in next year’s draft based on the time missed and what is considered a stronger overall draft class.
It said: “The offer that we extended was for Joey to contribute during all 16 games and beyond”.
The decision-makers in San Diego had more than a week to figure out the kind of contract details they planned to demand would be such a sticking point with Bosa’s camp. Bosa and his agent aren’t going to kowtow to the Chargers just because San Diego tried to run Bosa down in a public forum. The disagreement between the two sides is reaching a high school break-up level situation following a statement issued earlier today by the Chargers. The measure must receive two-thirds of the vote to pass, a number considered impossible to obtain in San Diego.
Earlier this month, Bosa’s mother posted a blunt message on Facebook. “Wish we pulled an Eli Manning on draft day”. He can sit out the 2016 season, wait out the 2017 offseason, and then re-enter the 2017 draft.
“We all know you can’t flip a switch and, ‘OK, I’m going to get 10 sacks or I’m going to get this many tackles.’ You have to actually build a rapport with your teammates, build a rapport with your coaches”.
Right now, it seems like the unbelievable is happening: Bosa’s rookie season will be put on hold. With Bosa absent, the Chargers have had to rely on Darius Philon as a starting defensive end.
