Many have wondered whether Windows Phone might be on its way out, after Microsoft confirmed plans to cut thousands of jobs from its mobile phone division. After several months of bug testing, some false alarms and quite a large number of PC preview builds, Microsoft has finally signed on the Windows 10 release to manufacturing build today.
“We will do everything we have to do to make sure we’re making progress on phones”, he said. We’re doing that with our innovation in Windows.
“We’re marking the Windows 10 launch by celebrating people and organizations who upgrade the world every day – and by helping them do even more”.
To get the new build, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates on your PC.
He outlined this strategy in a backstage interview at the Worldwide Partner Conference with ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley. In a separate blog post, the company said that “in select Microsoft Stores, fan celebrations will feature Windows 10 pop-up demo experiences, prizes, giveaways and more”. But as Nadella has repeatedly shown, he is acutely aware of – and unwilling to repeat – the mistakes of Microsoft’s past that ultimately lead to disastrous Nokia acquisition in the first place.
Microsoft is now the only major smartphone maker still turning out Windows Phone devices.
The countdown to the public release of Windows 10 has officially begun, as Microsoft has suspended Windows 10 Preview Builds in anticipation of the July 29 event.
However, this doesn’t mean that enterprise users are the only target, as Nadella explains, “I did buy Minecraft to create a new genre of gaming for mixed reality”.
‘Upgrade Your World’ is the slogan Microsoft is using for its global advertising campaign for Windows 10.
“Because all of this comes down to how are you going to get developers to come to Windows”.
With Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google Inc’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android now dominating the smartphone space, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has been struggling to establish its Windows Mobile platform.
