Record-breaking ‘Star Wars’ movie opens in China
The upcoming release on Saturday in the huge Chinese market of the film directed by J.J. Abrams could help give it a further push to light speed.
Actual studio box-office figures will not be released until Thursday morning. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has only claimed Avatar’s domestic record. The seventh instalment in the series surpassed the $760.5m mark previously set by Avatar in a record-breaking 20 days of release.
“Star War: The Force Awakens” has taken the title of the highest grossing movies of all time in North America.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now earning a very impressive $800 million in worldwide box-office.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” officially became the highest grossing movie in US history Wednesday, not adjusting for inflation.
Not many Chinese are familiar with “Star Wars”. To do so, Disney has tabbed the “Justin Bieber of China”, LuHan, known for his boyish good looks and legions of young female fans who follow him around, to provide an anthem for the movie. Where would “The Force Awakens” land, accounting for inflation?
However, this new “Star Wars” movie still has some work ahead to overtake “Avatar” with a global take of 2.79 billion dollars. However we can only assume with this latest record, The Force Awakens is one step closer to hitting those numbers, although admittedly it still feels like quite a long shot. Lucas sold “Star Wars” and his company Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012 for over $4 billion. In fact, it has not kicked off top-grossing movies in the domestic aspect such as “Gone with the Wind”, which was able to earn $1.7 billion during its time, reported NBC News.
